Bill Murray’s Outward Bound journey began in 1985 with a 21-day Leadership Skills course at North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS). Inspired by his instructors and the transformative Outward Bound methodology, he returned to NCOBS just two years later as an assistant instructor. Since then, his tenure has spanned over 30 years, where he has taken on numerous roles. Today, as Chief Operating Officer, he oversees admissions, facilities, IT and tuition revenue while serving on NCOBS’s Leadership Team.
When looking back over the course of his Outward Bound career, one thing stands out to Bill like no other: the staff. In fact, some of his longest and closest friends in life are the people he has worked alongside. From the instructors who led his 1985 expedition to the staff of today, Bill continues to admire the unwavering passion and drive of NCOBS staff across generations. One individual that stands out to him over the course of his career is Mary Decker, former Director of the Professional Development Program. Her unique blend of compassion and drive left a lasting impact on Bill, shaping his approach to leadership today.
Through its many opportunities and challenges, Bill feels that he has grown and gained so much through Outward Bound. He values the opportunity to do meaningful work that creates a lasting impact on students and the world around them. Some of his favorite memories include joining students in their final circle on the last night of course. In the soft glow of candlelight, a ceremony unfolds. Students share profound reflections deep into the night. Special connections are made. In these moments, staff can truly begin to see the impact that Outward Bound has on its students and how they will carry their journey forward.
As Bill reflects on his experiences, one thing is clear: working at NCOBS has provided him with a career that he can look back on with pride. Looking to the future, he believes that NCOBS’s mission of changing lives through challenge and discovery continues to have a positive impact. He intends to remain intentional and thoughtful in his work, ensuring that NCOBS remains true to its mission while remaining strong and sustainable.

Besides being an alum and staff member, Bill is also an Outward Bound parent. Bill passed on the tradition to his daughter, who attended a nine-day backpacking and rock-climbing course in the Blue Ridge Mountains last summer. The wisdom he shared with his daughter before her course is advice that any student may benefit from: be open to the entirety of the experience. With a little bit of time, learning can emerge that may not be immediately present.

Outside of NCOBS, Bill values spending time with family and friends. He enjoys travelling and introducing his two children to a broader world. He can be found giving back, often volunteering in his community. And of course, he loves spending time outdoors. Whether mountain biking or playing a game of basketball, Bill finds ways to stay active and connected with the natural world.
Thank you, Bill, for all that you do. We are lucky to have you as part of our NCOBS crew!
