This multi-pronged initiative, led by NCOBS staff in collaboration with a talented and committed local advisory board, is designed to proliferate Outward Bound’s positive impacts throughout the Charlotte community. Each year, scholarships are awarded to Charlotte area students, teachers, and military veterans.
UNITY PROJECT
This program operates in Charlotte in partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Twelve students, each selected from a partnering Unity school, are chosen to embark on a wilderness expedition together designed to assert their common humanity, to develop their courage and compassion as leaders. When they return, the group forms a Unity Club to organize and implement projects that address community issues.
DALTON LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
This annual scholarship awards an exemplary student with an all-expenses-paid backpacking course in the Blue Ridge Mountains. These expeditions teach technical skills like navigation and camp craft as well as teamwork and compassion. Included in this award is the cost for the course, provision of gear required for the wilderness course, and round-trip ground transportation.
CHARLOTTE EDUCATORS
This innovative experiential education program provides professional development for adults committed to empowering Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students to initiate social change. The Charlotte Educators Course is for adults who work with Charlotte-Mecklenburg students, particularly Charlotte-Mecklenburg high school students - classroom educators, non-profit leaders, volunteers, school support staff, community leaders, etc.
